Two Hearted River is a 2.3 mile out and back trail located near Newberry, Michigan that features a lake and is rated as moderate. This is not really a loop but itâs not very difficult to find a way down the sandy slope to walk back along shoreline. A perfect way to get a taste of the fixed dunes and varied forests located north of Lake Michigan, this hike is a pleasant way to spend a morning or an afternoon. The Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore section of the North Country Trail begins at the south end of the Mackinac Bridge and encompasses Straits State Park, St. Ignace (our Trail Town), the Hiawatha National Forest, and north to Whitefish Bay. Farther in, the Trail crosses the Little Bear River on a forest road and then meanders along the river and continues on the H40. The Tahoe Rim Trail spans two US states, California and Nevada. Starting from Two Hearted River State Forest Campground, the Trail crosses the river by means of a suspension bridge. You must hike over 80 miles from St. Ignace before you reach the first restaurant (Silver Creek Grill and Pub) near Whitefish Bay. Itâs as such perfect for advanced hikers. If hiking, follow the NCT north from Brevort Lake Road to the dam, then turn south to the Dam Road parking lot just before crossing the dam. This hiking trail will push you to your hiking limits. My absolute favorite part of my hikes through that section have been the seclusion. The Fox River Pathway takes you through "Hemingway country" near the Fox River where Ernest Hemingway based his "Big Two Hearted River" two-part short story chronicling his adventures along this classic Upper Peninsula trout stream.
